Brubaker wins sectional; Blazers advance

GREENVILLE, MIAMISBURG and VERSAILLES — National Trail sophomore Nick Brubaker claimed an individual championship by firing an 82 during the Division III Boys sectional golf tournament at Turtle Creek Golf Course in Greenville on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

Brubaker’s performance helped the Blazers to a third-place team finish and a spot in the district tournament this week.

The top four teams and top four players not on a qualifying team advance to the district tournament.

Brubaker shot a 39 on the front nine and a 44 on the back.

As a team, Trail shot a 360 to finish behind Arcanum (351) and Newton (355).

Freshman Kellen Laird shot an 88. He was followed by senior Zachary Rutan, who shot 92 and sophomore Justin Turner’s 98. Junior Fletcher Davies shot 102 to round out the roster.

Tri-County North finished 14th with a team score of 452.

Senior Levi Pahl shot an 85 to qualify for the district tournament.

Pahl shot 45 on the front side and a 40 on the back.

Rounding out the scoring for North was freshman Brayden Bacher (107), junior Zane Owens (121), sophomore Blake Stump (139) and freshman Jack Vanderschaff (141).

In the Division II tournament at Pipestone, Preble Shawnee finished 12th overall with a 427, while Eaton was 14th with a score of 446.

Senior Garrett Rader led the Arrows with a 101. Freshman Chance Mowen shot a 105. Rounding out the roster for Shawnee was freshman Levi Agee (108), senior Hayden Ford (113) and sophomore Carson Hollon (115).

For Eaton, Gabe McCarty led the way with a 95. He was followed by junior Derek McCoy-Dudas (113), sophomore Anthony Watson (117), sophomore Andrew Webb (121) and sophomore Derrick Michael (123).

In the girls Division II tournament at Stillwater Valley Golf Course in Versailles, Eaton finished 9th with a team score of 446.

The Eagles were led by junior Karley Kleinberg’s 98. Sophomore Alanna Smith shot 111, while freshman Tai Mize shot 115. Junior Sophie Kochensparger shot 122 and senior Kelsey Campbell finished with 147.

The boys Division III district tournament was scheduled to be played on Monday, Oct. 3 at Heatherwoode Golf Club in Springboro.
