It has become tradition recently for Ohio State football newcomers to have a black stripe placed down the middle of their helmet where the signature red stripe should be. New recruits wear a black stripe on their helmet until they earn the right to wear the traditional helmet.

On Thursday, QB Devin Brown became the latest Buckeye to shed his black stripe. The program announced on Twitter the latest inductee into the brotherhood.

In the video, the Buckeyes coaching staff called Brown “a natural born leader. [Brown] has been working his butt off, and handling his business on and off the field.”

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound QB is in his first year with the Buckeyes, and was one of 13 early enrollees who arrived on campus back in January. Brown was a four-star recruit, and was the nation’s No. 43 overall prospect and the No. 6 quarterback.

Hailing from Draper, Utah, Brown threw for 4,881 yards and 57 TDs and had 430 yards rushing and 8 touchdowns in his senior season alone. The QB threw for almost 8,000 yards and 85 touchdown passes in his high-school career, while leading the school to a state championship.

Brown is the 16th Buckeye member to shed his black stripe this season.
