Doris Stanzione, 61, claims in court papers reviewed by NJ.com that she was left "seriously and permanently injured" during the July 2020 incident at the ShopRite in Belleville on Washington Avenue.

"Stanzione was placing groceries in her shopping cart when her right arm [and] elbow was speared and punctured by a loose metal bar in the defendant’s supplied shopping cart," according to Stanzione's lawsuit, filed May 31 in Essex County Superior Court.

The woman claims the mishap left her with "a serious laceration and nerve damage in her right arm."

Laura Cordasco, 66, filed a similar lawsuit against the same ShopRite location, claiming she was injured that October when the wheels of her shopping cart locked, throwing her into the air and over the cart at the store's entrance.

"The wheels on the cart suddenly and violently locked, [and the] plaintiff was violently thrown above and over the cart with her whole body," her suit said, adding that she was left severely injured and will need expensive medical care in the future.

According to the report, ShopRite is accused in the lawsuits of negligence, failure to keep the property free of hazards, and failure to inspect and maintain their shopping carts.

The Belleville Shoprite did not immediately respond to the outlet's requests for comment on the lawsuits.
