Woman hits two mailboxes, pole in suspected DUI crash

A Tamaqua woman who crashed her vehicle on Owl Creek Road on Sept. 16 was taken into custody after borough police learned there was a warrant for her arrest in Bucks County.

Police said drunk driving charges are also pending against Heather Smith, 46, of 317 Owl Creek Road. According to police, officers were dispatched to 254 Owl Creek Road at noon for a vehicle driven by Smith that struck a mailbox at 259 Owl Creek Road, then crossed the road and struck a mailbox and telephone pole at 254 Owl Creek Road.

The car swerved back to the original lane of travel and hit a pile of boulders before stopping.

Police said Smith walked away from the crash site and told officers she was looking for her dog. As officers spoke to her, they detected a strong odor of alcohol on her breath and noticed she had an unsteady gait.

Police said they found a half empty bottle of Fireball whiskey and two empty beer cans in the car. The vehicle was towed.

Smith failed field sobriety tests and was taken to St. Luke’s Miners Memorial in Coaldale for a blood alcohol test. Results are pending.

It was learned that she was wanted on failure to appear charges and was taken to the Schuylkill County Prison for extradition to Bucks County.
