Illegal crossings rise year over year at US-Canada border in Northeast, CBP officials say
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said agents have been busy securing the northern border as illegal entries have more than doubled compared to last year.
The Swanton sector of the U.S. Border Patrol consists of officers in Vermont, New York and northern New Hampshire.
Officials for the sector said data shows that August has been its busiest month so far this year with agents seeing a 474% increase in illegal border crossings when compared to August 2021.
“When we interview a lot of the people that we catch, we hear stories that it's their perception that it's safer across here, through the Canadian border, than it is on the southern border. What we're trying to do is get the word out that they're much better off to do this legally,” Deputy Patrol Agent Raymond Bresnahan, of the U.S. Border Patrol, said.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has a variety of ways to monitor activity along unpatrolled areas of the U.S.-Canada border, including the use of trail cameras and other devices, officials said.
Officials are asking anyone who may see anything suspicious to report it by calling 1-800-689-3362.
