The 38-year-old man who Springfield Township police shot and killed during an armed confrontation Wednesday morning at the man's home has been identified as Jeremy McCracken.

Also, the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which is officially looking into the fatal shooting, said Thursday it does not believe there is body-worn camera or dash camera video from the officers directly involved in the incident. BCI, which is part of the state Attorney General's office, continues to actively investigate the incident, spokesman Steve Irwin said.

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office said an autopsy Thursday determined McCracken died of a gunshot wound to his torso.

Springfield Township police say McCracken shot at them as they went to his home about 11:30 a.m. on East Waterloo Road over a zoning investigation. No officers were injured in the encounter.

What neighbors had to say:'In six years I've only seen him three times'

McCracken was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital where he died.

"The shooting occurred during a follow-up investigation of a zoning law violation at a residence in the township," the department said in a news release Wednesday. "While conducting the investigation, the officers were shot at by the property owner. The officers returned shots, incapacitating the shooter."

Neighbors said the zoning investigation involving McCracken likely had to do with motor vehicles that he had parked on his property. One neighbor said the township had towed two vehicles from McCracken's home over the winter.
