Canada says don’t expect the play-calling to be much different in Buffalo

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – At least from the plays you see called, don’t expect much different from the Steelers offense Sunday in Buffalo.

“Obviously, we try to do what guys like to do,” said Steelers Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada.  “We are going to focus on what everybody does well, we hope.  There may be tweaks here, a route that Mitch liked that Kenny liked different.  Big picture, it’s going to be the same plays.  We have to execute better and play better all around.”

The scheme is not going to change overnight, nor is the structure of the offense.  To be fair, it would be nearly impossible to try and design something completely different in the span of a couple of days.  He said the plays from the first half to the second half on Sunday against the Jets were essentially the same.

That is also the same as far as using Pickett’s ability to run.  Canada noted ‘how many hits do you want your quarterback to take?’  It would be surprising, aside from scrambles, if you see Pickett on many designed runs.

“We have to continue to play better,” Canada said.  “Our offense hasn’t been scoring enough points.  You make a change, but it’s not all a reflection of quarterback play.

Canada noted there were times where Pickett made mistakes as well Sunday, as to acknowledge there was blame to go around.

“Disappointing last week, we had the ball 1st and 10 at the 31 and didn’t finish the game,” Canada said.  “We had an execution error on a toss and gave them the ball back.”

The Steelers OC says Mitch Trubisky has been very helpful with this week’s game plan with his knowledge of the Bills, playing in Buffalo last year.  He’s talked to his teammates, the coaches and specifically Pickett.

“Mitch has been an unbelievable pro through this whole deal,” Canada said.  “Obviously, it’s not what he wanted.  None of us are happy with the way we’ve performed on offense.  It’s tough, but he’s been a pro.  He’s very, very involved.  Big game, helping doing all he can.”

Canada said Pickett has had a tremendous career and they are expecting that to continue.  He said Pickett is as advertised, he plays with an edge.

“Everybody got to play to their personality,” Canada said.  “I think we highlighted that with each quarterback during this process.  How he does it and what he gets himself going with is great. It’s still a bottom line business in how you play and how you perform.”

“We got to make a couple more plays a game to be in a different situation that we are in.  We are not getting it done.  The numbers are the numbers, we have to win games and score more points.  We have to keep moving forward until we get the outcome we want.”
