After months of declining to comment definitively on his intentions regarding seeking a second term in the White House, President Joe Biden reportedly told MSNBC host Rev. Al Sharpton last month that he was indeed going to pursue a second term.
“I’m going to do it again,” Biden told Sharpton, according to an official of Sharpton’s National Action Network, who said Sharpton relayed the remark afterward.
Now that intention has been confirmed by Biden’s press secretary.
“Here’s what I can say, and the president has said this himself. He intends to run in 2024,” Karine Jean-Pierre told the media during a press briefing Tuesday.
That statement is very much of a piece with what the President himself said in a cagey response during his September 18 appearance on CBS’s “60 Minutes.”
“Look, my intention, as I said to begin with, is that I would run again,” Biden said during that televised conversation. “But it’s just an intention. But is it a firm decision that I run again? That remains to be seen.”
With former President Donald Trump also hinting frequently at taking his own shot at a second term, Biden’s apparent decision makes it increasingly likely that the 2024 Presidential election will give voters a case of 2020 déjà vu.
While Biden’s tenure as Commander-in-Chief was deeply unpopular as recently as mid-summer, his approval numbers have risen as of late. After a late July low of 36.8% approval, Biden now sits at 42.1%, according to RealClearPolitics.
That rise, aided by the passage of popular legislation, has helped to quell some of the grumblings on the Left that an alternate Presidential prospect would be necessary to keep a Democrat in the White House.
