Mayor Jones: "We're sick and tired of being talked down to"

Mayor Tishaura Jones responds to suggestion from St. Charles County Executive to take control of police away from city and create single City/County judicial circuit

SAINT LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - "If the [St. Charles] County Executive were serious, he'd offer up resources to help us with regional issues," St. Louis City Mayor Tishaura Jones said Thursday morning on KMOX in response to the suggestion by St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann that creating a City-County Prosecutor's office and putting city police under outside control, would help solve the region's crime issues. "If he was really serious he would just pick up the phone and call me."

"I'm right here, Steve, if you're listening. He has not reached out to me personally on this." Speaking on Total Information AM, Jones pointed out, "Steve Ehlmann was not elected by the residents of the city of St. Louis, let's start there. Does he really have the best interests of the city in mind? If he did he'd been having real, honest conversations instead of lobbing pot shots in the press. We're sick and tired of being talked down to." She added that Governor Parson is in support of local control, not state control.

In a recent Op Ed piece, and on KMOX this week, Ehlmann pushed for a single judicial circuit, and suggested he'd reverse his past support for St. Louis City control of the police department. "I don't hear anybody out there really defending the status quo with regard to what we have now," he said.

When asked about St. Louis Public Safety Director Dan Isom's suggestion that state troopers be given permission to enter city limits to help on major highways in the city, Jones tells KMOX she would invite that.

In her visit to the KMOX studios, Jones also spoke about her call this week to invest $40 Million for safer streets in the city using ARPA funds and to implement city-wide public safety measures. She's suggested the ward-by-ward method of applying street funding isn't working. Jones says the reaction so far has been positive.
