Watch: Garth Brooks Stuns Ashley McBryde With Invite To Become an Opry Member

Ashley McBryde: “It would be the great joy and the great honor of my life.”

Garth Brooks surprised Ashley McBryde on national television this morning when he interrupted her appearance on CBS Mornings to invite her to become the next member of The Grand Opry.

“I’m here for a proposal,” Brooks said via remote from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville.

McBryde, happy to see Brooks, looked confused.

When one of the hosts pointed out that he is already married, Brooks replied: “I am, but is part of a family that keeps growing.”

Brooks told McBryde that she knew where he was, at The Grand Ole Opry, standing in the circle of wood where she stands.

McBryde appeared to understand what was about to happen at that moment, closed her mouth and looked serious.

Brooks’ voice started to break.

“On behalf of the Opry and myself as an Opry member, I’m going to try not to cry,” he said. “We’d love for you to consider becoming the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry.

McBryde exhaled slowly and closed her eyes as she fought back emotion.

“It would be the great joy and the great honor of my life,” she said.

Brooks explained The Grand Ole Opry is the “longest-living family in music history.”

“You belong in it,” Brooks said. “We need you. You’ll make us stronger for decades to come. I love you. Congratulations. It couldn’t happen to a sweeter person.”

McBryde dabbed tears from her face with a tissue.

“There’s Grammys and being a member of the Grand Ole Opry are the two greatest things that could happen to you as an entertainer,” she explained. “I’ve always said I will earn it. This is a pretty surreal moment.

Brooks said there isn’t a member of the Opry who hadn’t earned it.

“It’s the love they show for the Opry,” he explained. “It’s the respect they show for country music. Th Grammys and CMAs are all going to fade. This won’t. This will be until the day they put you in the ground – you’ll be part of the coolest show on the planet.”

But the surprises weren’t over for McBryde. She looked over her shoulder; her mother had traveled from Arkansas to be there for the moment. Her mother was standing backstage, and McBryde said, “I’m going to ugly cry on television.”

Her mother walked out crying, wrapped McBryde in her arms and said, and said, “I’m so proud of you.”

It’s been a busy week for McBryde. She released her critically acclaimed third studio album “Ashley McBryde Presents: Lindeville” last week.
