70-year-old New Jersey shoots and kills himself as police respond to burglary call

SECAUCUS, NJ – A 70-year-old man was rushed to the hospital with a single gunshot wound to the chest after an incident that took place yesterday afternoon in Secaucus.

At around 1 pm, Secaucus police officers responded to an apartment building in the area of 10th Street after receiving a report of a burglary in progress.

The first police officer at the scene reported that a man walked toward him in the parking lot of the apartment complex, pulled a gun and shot himself in the chest in front of the police officer.

The officer immediately rushed toward the man to provide medical treatment until EMTs arrived.


The man was identified as a 70-year-old male from Clifton, but police did not release his name.


He was taken to Hudson Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Although the shot was not fired by the responding officer, the incident is being investigated by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office as required by state directive.
