A ShopRite in Essex County is facing separate lawsuits from two women claiming they were seriously injured while pushing defective shopping carts.

Doris Stanzione, 61, of Belleville, claims in court papers she was hurt at ShopRite of Belleville, located in the 700 block of Washington Avenue.

“Stanzione was placing groceries in her shopping cart when her right arm (and) elbow was speared and punctured by a loose metal bar in the defendant’s supplied shopping cart,” according to Stanzione’s lawsuit, filed May 31 in Superior Court of Essex County.

The woman suffered “a deep laceration and nerve damage in her right arm,” the suit states. “She was seriously and permanently injured” in the incident, which occurred July 12, 2020, the suit states.

A few months later, Laura Cordasco, 66, of Cedar Grove, filed a similar lawsuit alleging she was also injured in a shopping cart mishap at the same ShopRite location.

Cordasco claims she was thrown into the air and over her shopping cart when the wheels locked on her cart at the store’s entrance, according to her lawsuit filed Sept. 26.

Cordasco alleges she was severely injured and will require costly medical care in the future.

ShopRite is accused in the lawsuits of negligence, failure to keep the property free of hazards, and failure to inspect and maintain their shopping carts.

A spokesman for ShopRite of Belleville did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the lawsuits.
