Traffic along Interstate 64 and Interstate 664 ground to a halt Thursday morning, causing backups as long as 6 miles for Hampton Roads commuters.

While the backups were notable, Virginia State Police said the only associated incidents were minor wrecks.

Virginia State Police investigated two minor accidents in the northbound lanes of I-664 which were quickly cleared Thursday morning. Additionally, a three-vehicle wreck with property damage occurred in the southbound lane of I-664. Two separate people in the southbound lanes who were caught in the resulting traffic delays suffered panic attacks while in the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel and had to be towed out, according to Michelle Anaya, a state police spokesperson.

The two people who suffered panic attacks did not require further medical attention.

The westbound lanes of I-64 at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel were backed up 6 miles around 8:15 a.m. but no lanes were closed.

Other than the wrecks on I-664, Anaya said “everything else was typical morning commutes in the Hampton Roads area.”

“We have not seen any significant changes in traffic,” Anaya said in an email.
