(KWNO)- The Trempealeau County Sheriff’s office is conducting its popular Helping Out Hunger program for the 6th year.

The program works by finding those in need of food, to get food to stock their freezers. In particular, deer. The County Dispatch Center first started the initiative after noticing a large number of deer being killed in car vs. deer accidents.

They wondered if it was possible to help the people in need of food, get that food in the form of deer that have been killed on the road. This way, all the good meat in those deer that die in car accidents will not go to waste.

The County Dispatch Center starts a new list each year of people that want deer.  Of course, the center, as well as the Wisconsin DNR, make sure that the deer meat is healthy and able to consume. Then, when a deer becomes available, the center refers back to its list, finds someone in the area, and makes a call for the people in need to come to get the deer.

If anyone is interested in participating in the program or knows someone who could use the program, contact the dispatch center at 715-538-4351 and answer a few basic questions to get a name on the list.
