Springfield police released the name of the pedestrian struck and killed by a driver Tuesday morning. Ronnie Highbear, 35, was walking northbound across Republic Road when he was hit by an SUV traveling east near the Fremont Avenue intersection.

The Nissan Rogue that struck Highbear on Oct. 4 at about 7:28 a.m. was driven by Ryan Morris, 31, of Ash Grove. The crash remains under investigation, but driver impairment is not suspected as a factor, according to Springfield police.

Highbear, of Rapid City, South Dakota, was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital following the collision. His family has been notified.

Highbear is the 20th person to die in a traffic accident in Springfield this year.
