BEVERLY, Mass. — Shoebert, a beloved seal who captivated crowds of people as he swam around in Beverly’s Shoe Pond last month, has returned to the North Shore.

The gray seal was fitted with a tracker and released into the wild off Block Island last week after a short stay at the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut.

The wayward 235-pound aquatic mammal was initially taken into custody after he waddled from the pond to Beverly police headquarters.

According to aquarium officials, Shoebert has since navigated his way back to Massachusetts.

Shoebert was then shipped to the Mystic Aquarium where the aquarium’s animal care team conducted blood tests, X-rays, and a full veterinary checkup before giving him a clean bill of health.

Over the course of the last week, Shoebert’s tracker indicated that he stopped in Cape Cod before heading north to the area where he was rescued.

Aquarium officials noted that it’s unlikely Shoebert stays in the area for a prolonged period of time.
