A Cedar Rapids woman could face up to five years in prison after originally charged with murder in the stabbing of her boyfriend.

The Gazette reports that the first trial of 38-year-old Jacqueline Holmes ended in a mistrial when one of the potential jurors told a sitting jurist about an interaction that they had with the woman.

The second trial featured testimony from a retired Illinois law and psychology professor, who said that Holmes was a battered woman. She said Holmes told her about her boyfriend, 35-year-old Tremaine Williams, who reportedly kicked, punched and choked her during their relationship. There were also two other men who physically abused Holmes previously.

The jury last week found Holmes guilty of the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Williams on March 4th, 2020.

Sentencing is scheduled for December 13th in Linn County District Court.
