Kim Jung Gi, a renowned South Korean comic book artist and illustrator, died at the age of 47.

South Korea’s arts and entertainment industry lost its legendary artist, Kim Jung Gi after he died this week. Multiple international and local news outlets confirmed the news, leaving everyone in deep shock.

Kim Jung Gi’s Cause of Death

Los Angeles Times and CNN, among others, reported Kim Jung Gi’s death this week, confirming that the comic artist “suddenly” died this week.

His agent told CNN that he was in Paris to attend an exhibition but suffered chest pains shortly before his flight to New York. Kim Jung Gi was scheduled to make an appearance at Comic-Con.

A statement on his Instagram page also detailed the artist’s last moments, revealing that he was taken to a nearby hospital to undergo surgery but passed away before he received it.

“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we inform you of the sudden passing of Kim Jung Gi. After finishing his last schedule in Europe, Jung Gi went to the airport to fly to New York, where he experienced chest pains and was taken to a nearby hospital for surgery, but sadly passed away,” the statement reads. “After having done so much for us, you can now put down your brushes. Thank you Jung Gi.”

Following his death, his colleagues and followers sent him heartfelt messages as they honored his works in the industry. Comic-Con also shared a tribute in which it called him a “master artist” who made unique contributions to the comics industry.

Kim Jung Gi’s Milestones

Before his death, Kim Jung Gi managed to create memorable masterpieces, including the drawing that led him to score a Guinness Record.

In 2015, the artist set the record for “longest drawing by an individual for the Fisheye Art” when he worked for four days and 20 hours to draw a fresco that shows the living heritage of Penang.

Aside from collaborating with Marvel and DC Comics, he also published six sketchbooks before his passing.
