Months after a resignation, spurred by scandal, the Oklahoma Tourism Department has a new leader.
Former director of Oklahoma’s unemployment system, Shelley Zumwalt is taking over, trying to clean up the mess left from the state parks maligned deal with the Swadley’s restaurants.
"I hadn’t ever really thought about it, I’ve always liked the agency, it’s always done great work but I had never thought about a possibility about going into that role," Zumwalt said.
Zumwalt comes to the Department of Tourism and Recreation after leading Oklahoma’s employment security commission. She held that role during the pandemic when unemployment programs across the country faced unprecedented demand.
She said that’s where she focused on transparency, something the lawmakers and the public will want to see following a scandal where Swadley’s Foggy Bottom Kitchen allegedly got preferential treatment in the bidding for state park lodges.
"I think transparency is super important, and that’s one of the reasons I took over OESC, I think I did hundreds of interviews within a short amount of time being accountable and saying, you’re going to see me talking about the things you’re hearing about," Zumwalt said.
State Rep. Ryan Martinez chairs the special house committee investigating the deal between the state and Swadley’s.
"I think it’s an opportunity, I think there’s a lot of work to be done at the Department of Tourism as far as gaining the public trust back and gaining the trust of the legislature back," Martinez said.
He said gaining that trust back needs to be a priority for Zumwalt.
"What it comes down to is accountability and trust and if you have good people under you that understand the system and understand what’s at stake, that makes it much easier," Zumwalt said.
Zumwalt will serve as interim executive director until she’s confirmed by the Senate, which will likely happen after lawmakers return to the Capitol in 2023.
