Kelly, Schmidt participate in final Kansas governor's debate

In the race for Kansas Governor, Democrat Laura Kelly and Republican Derek Schmidt, the two leading candidates, held a debate Wednesday. It was the second time they've gone head-to-head in a traditional debate.

They covered topics from the future of abortion regulations to the legalization of medical marijuana, agreeing in some areas but disagreeing in others, such as the economy.  "Her views on this are so far out of the mainstream," Schmidt said.

Both candidates promised tax relief but Schmidt also pointed to the failures of Democrats in Washington.  "Does she think we are better off in Kansas and America today, with Joe Biden as President?" Schmidt asked.

Kelly responded by saying she's not going to answer that.  "Because, for my entire time in the Senate, and my entire time in the governor's office, I have stayed focused like a laser on Kansas," Kelly said.

This was the final meeting between the candidates before early voting begins in a couple of weeks.
