Spencer, IA (KICD)– The candidates for newly drawn Iowa House District 6 faced off at Spencer City Hall on Wednesday answering questions from local media ahead of the November General Election.

Among the issues posed was what incumbent Megan Jones and Challenger James Eliason would like to to see fixed in the state legislature if they win a seat in Des Moines.

Eliason went with simplifying certain approval processes while also making sure more than one person makes decisions.

Jones wanted to focus on having a smaller government with smarter spending.

On the other side of that the candidates were then asked what is being done well in the state right now in their viewpoint with Jones naming off a number of different items that all come back to her being proud to be an Iowan.

Eliason like that the current legislature has been able to work within the means of the budget.

The conversation also shifted to education which is one of the big issues Eliason is running his campaign on.

Jones did not disagree that schools across the state need additional funding but based on the most recent session, the current rate is the best compromise that could be achieved.

Staying with schools the question came up about each of the candidate thoughts on the recent announcement by Spirit Lake Schools to arm a select number of staff members for added school security.

Eliason’s opinion falls on the line of not prohibiting such a policy at the state level but perhaps having some kind of regulation when it comes to training.
