Claremont police said they responded to the Walmart on Bowen Street around 2:45 p.m. for a report of a shooting.
They said this all stems from some sort of incident between two groups of people in two separate cars when a person in one of the vehicles fired a gun at the other.
Both cars left the scene and police later tracked down the suspect vehicle that had shell casings inside. Three people were taken into custody.
Police said Xzavier Gibeau, 18, of Troy; Denzil Bruce, 20, of Keene; and Emil Ortiz, 18, of Keene, were arrested in connection to the incident.
They are facing charges including conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Bruce is also charged with first-degree assault.
A woman called police shortly after the incident saying she was driving the vehicle with the man who was injured, officials said.
The man is being treated at an area hospital and is expected to recover. Their identity has not been released.
Investigators said both groups know each other and this was not a random shooting, but Claremont police Chief Brent Wilmot stressed that it was a very serious situation.
"This was the middle of the afternoon. Walmart is a very busy place with a lot of business going on at that time. There were other customers and associates in the parking lot," Wilmot said. "We've reviewed surveillance footage and we're concerned not just for the folks who were involved, but the folks nearby as well."
The investigation is ongoing.
The three suspects will be arraigned Thursday.
