Black Adam is set to inject some muscle into the box office later this month, with current projections standing at a $70 million-plus opening weekend. THR reports that current tracking has the Dwayne Johnson-starring DCEU film projected to gross between $70 million and $75 million in its first weekend when it arrives on October 21st.

While that number pales in comparison to those of recent MCU films like Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260.1 million), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($187.4 million) and Thor: Love and Thunder ($144.2 million), the opening would be the best for a DCEU film since Justice League started with $93.8 million back in November of 2017. It would also notably be much higher than the start of Shazam, which began with $53.5 million back in April of 2019 as the last pre-pandemic DCEU entry. It’s also important to note that the film could go higher depending on positive buzz and reviews; Venom was tracking similar to Black Adam and ended up with $80 million in its opening weekend.

The start would be the biggest of Johnson’s solo career (the Fast & Furious films, which he is more of an ensemble player, have opened higher). The previous high for the WWE star-turned-actor in a leading role Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw which started with $60 million. (The Mummy Returns started with $68.1 million in 2001 but that was a cameo.)

The film also stars Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, Quintessa Swindell, Mo Amer, and Pierce Brosnan. It is described as follows:

In ancient Kahndaq, Teth Adam was bestowed the almighty powers of the gods. After using these powers for vengeance, he was imprisoned, becoming Black Adam. Nearly 5,000 years have passed and Black Adam has gone from man, to myth, to legend. Now released, his unique form of justice, born out of rage, is challenged by modern day heroes who form the Justice Society: Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Atom Smasher and Cyclone.
