Area Sports Roundup: Oct. 4, 2022

The Worthington Trojans boys soccer team snapped a two-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 4-1 victory over New Ulm at Trojan Field.

Worthington led 2-0 at halftime thanks to a pair of goals from Jonathan Banegas. The first goal came on a penalty kick, while another came on a pass from Santos Orellana.

In the second half, Orellana made it a 3-0 match by scoring from 44 feet out on an assist from Banegas. New Ulm got the next goal, but Banegas would score once again from 15 yards out after the Tigers’ goalkeeper misplayed the ball. Banegas now has 22 goals thus far this season.

With the victory, the Trojans – who have already clinched this fall’s conference championship – improved to 13-2 overall. WHS, ranked eighth in the latest state Class AA poll, hosts Fairmont in its regular season finale on Thursday.

In girls soccer, the Trojans traveled to New Ulm and were defeated by a score of 7-2.

Princess Arley Martinez scored in the first half for WHS off a Sara Esquivel corner kick. The second goal came from Leidy Chavez in the second half on an assist from Sahyra Talamantes.

Coach Anne Greenway noted the Trojans played very well offensively but struggled on defense due to injured starting players. Worthington plays at Fairmont on Thursday.

The Minnesota West Bluejays football team will be in action this week after all – but it won’t be at home.

The Bluejays, who were idle last week after getting a win by forfeit over Vermillion, had hoped to get a game during their bye week rather than have no game for two consecutive weeks. Minnesota West will travel to Dakota State in Madison, S.D. for a Sunday road game against the school’s JV squad. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

The Worthington girls tennis team was eliminated from team sectional play Tuesday, as it lost 7-0 at Prior Lake.
