The Columbus Crew looked poised to pick up three key points on the road over Charlotte FC, but the MLS newcomers scored deep into extra time to tie the match.
The Crew led 2-1 until Andre Shinyashiki scored four minutes into stoppage time to tie the game 2-2, sending the Crew home with just one point with one match remaining.
Lucas Zelarayán opened the scoring when he scored on a free kick from near midfield, giving the Crew a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute.
Zelarayán's goal from 56.1 yards out is the longest free-kick goal in MLS since the stat began being kept in 2010. The previous record was 52 yards.
The Crew took the 1-0 advantage into the half.
In the 54th minute, Luis Díaz scored on an assist from Derrick Etienne to double the Crew's advantage.
Just four minutes later, Charlotte FC cut into Columbus' advantage when Daniel Ríos scored.
Columbus was able to hold onto its 2-1 advantage until the 94th minute when Shinashiki sent a header past the outstretched arms of Eloy Room.
Picking up just one point, the Crew currently sits in a tie for sixth place in the MLS Eastern Conference standings with just one regular season match remaining.
Columbus will be looking to secure three points when it travels to the Sunshine State to take on Orlando City SC on Sunday.
A loss to Inter Miami FC Wednesday night would eliminate Orlando from playoff contention.
