RAPID CITY S.D. – All these Californians are filling up South Dakota! Or are they? We analyzed IRS tax return data to determine which states people are moving to South Dakota from, as well as get a sense for just how many people are coming here overall.

The #1 net source of newcomers to the state will likely be no surprise to locals: California.

With around 1100 families moving here from California in the last year, they make up the most significant population of interstate immigrants after accounting for those leaving the state.

This is a significant shift from previous trends, where South Dakota had roughly equal levels of people moving to and from the state. This is still true of a few surrounding states, like Minnesota and Nebraska. Many people move to South Dakota from these places, but nearly just as many South Dakotans move there as well.

But that raises another question: Where else are South Dakotans leaving to? The answer: Where it’s warm.

Arizona, Florida, Texas, and Alabama make up the top 4 states for South Dakota net outflow. All of them are warm and southern.
