CENTRAL VALLEY – In the wake of last Friday night’s incident in which three adults were shot immediately following a football game in Newburgh, the Monroe-Woodbury Central School District has announced it will no longer travel to Newburgh for athletic competitions this fall.
The Warwick school district, which had just concluded a varsity game with NFA last Friday, had already announced it would no longer play against Newburgh on that school’s home turf for the foreseeable future.
Monroe-Woodbury Superintendent of Schools Elsie Rodriguez said the athletic departments from her district and Newburgh “will work together on a weekly basis to identify suitable alternate locations.” She said as winter athletic season begins, the district will reevaluate the situation.
“The safety of our school community, including our student-athletes, coaches, bus drivers and family members, remains our first and most important priority, whether here on the M-W campus or while traveling to other schools,” Superintendent Rodriguez said.
She said a districtwide safety audit is underway and school officials have identified safety as “the primary focus” for the 2022-2023 school year.
