CONCORD, Calif. (KRON) — The Sunvalley Shopping Center in Concord was evacuated after a report of a person with a gun Wednesday afternoon, KRON4 confirmed. One person was taken into custody at about 4:45 p.m., and nobody was injured.
The incident started at about 2:45 p.m. when a man walked into a jewelry store and claimed he had a gun, the Concord Police Department told KRON4. The man then situated himself in the middle of the mall, prompting security to evacuate the mall and call police.
Concord police later said the man was on the upper level of the mall near JC Penney, acting “strangely.” The man had a small duffle bag and told officers he had a gun and would use it if approached.
Police were eventually able to communicate with the man using a drone and convinced him to surrender. It is unknown at this time whether a weapon was recovered.
Video from the scene showed several police cars in front of the Round1 arcade. The mall has since reopened.
Last week, there was a standoff near the mall when a rape suspect barricaded himself in a Nordstrom Rack. After 13 hours, the suspect was arrested and identified as Joseph Alan Ramos, 26, of Concord.
