PORTLAND (WGME) -- Maine lobstermen are speaking out Wednesday night against rules meant to protect the endangered right whale, rules they say are devastating to their livelihood.
The meeting in Portland Wednesday night is their only in-person chance to explain the impact.
The room is packed with Maine lobstermen and state and federal leaders.
What is said Wednesday night will essentially help the federal government evaluate the overall impact of these rules.
Maine’s congressional delegation and the governor have asked for the rules to be revoked outright, but that hasn’t happened.
They’ve repeated pleaded for a delay, so the industry has more time to get the correct gear.
Because of a federal judge’s ruling, plans to lower the risk to the right whales have been fast-tracked years ahead of schedule.
Senator Susan Collins says by hearing directly from those in the industry, it will make a difference.
“In my time in Washington, representing Maine, I cannot think of another case where the regulatory burden processes rate such a threat to an iconic part of Mainers’ economy,” Collins said.
The meeting is set to go until 9 p.m. at USM.
