DETROIT (WWJ) – Two people are in custody after a barricaded gunman situation unfolded on Detroit's west side Wednesday afternoon when someone fired shots at police officers.

A bailiff was called to a home near Westwood and Dayton, in the area of Ford Road and Evergreen around 3:30 p.m. and called Detroit police for assistance in making an arrest, Deputy Chief of Police Franklin Hayes said during a press briefing outside the home.

When the officers showed up, they were fired on. It was not immediately clear how many shots were fired, but reports say construction workers in the area hear six shots in rapid succession that sounded like firecrackers.

The bailiff and officers were not hit by the gunfire and returned fire, before tactically retreating and setting up barricaded gunman protocols, Hayes said.

Those inside the home, a man and a woman, were not injured. Authorities have not released their names or ages.

Hayes said officers used a loudspeaker to assure the suspect they did not want to hurt them and wanted the situation to end peacefully.

A neighbor who knew the suspect called him and was able to talk him into surrendering.

“We truly thank that neighbor for helping us get to this peaceful resolution,” Hayes said.

Hayes said it was about a half hour between the time the shots were fired and the arrests. It was not clear why the second person was taken into custody.

Officials have not said why the bailiff was called to the home in the first place, but Hayes said he "was there lawfully."

Authorities had been asking people in the neighborhood to stay inside and others to avoid the area while the situation unfolded.
