U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Swanton Sector says illegal entry into U.S. has more than doubled this year
U.S. Customs and Border Protection Swanton Sector said its agents have been busy this year securing the northern border, as illegal entries into the U.S. have more than doubled over the past year.
Video posted to the Swanton Sector's Facebook page shows agents taking several people into custody, after they allegedly crossed the border illegally.
Officials said August has been its busiest month of the year so far with agents seeing a 474% increase in illegal border crossings compared to August of 2021, according to the latest data.
"When we interview a lot of the people that we catch we hear stories that it's their perception that it's safer across [the northern border], through the Canadian border than it is on the southern border. What we're trying to do is get the word out that they're much better off to do this legally," said Raymond Bresnahan, deputy patrol agent with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
People who are detained at the border aren't the only ones that face potential arrest.
The U.S. States Attorney's office has arrested several people so far this year for helping those who've illegally crossed into the U.S.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has a variety of ways to monitor activity along the border, including the use of trail cameras and other devices.
The agency is asking anyone who may see anything suspicious to report it by calling 1-800-689-3362.
