REPORTER: THEY SAY THE ONE THING THEY SAY YOU CAN ALWAYS COUNT ON IS THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE WILL NEVER ASK FOR A PAYMENT OR PERSONAL INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE. >> IF THERES A CERTAIN LEVEL OF URGENCY TO IT, GENERALLY THAT MEANS THAT YOU’RE BEING SCAMMED. REPORTER: THE OKLAHOMA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS THE NUMBER OF SCAMS CIRCLING THE OKLAHOMA COUNTY AREA IS INCREASING. ASKING VICTIMS FOR PERSONAL INFORMATION OR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION EVEN POSING AS SHERIFF TOMMIE JOHNSON TO GET IT. >> THE WAY THE SCAM WORKS IS THEY’LL REACH OUT TO YOU VIA TELEPHONE AND IT’S A PHISHING SCAM SO OFTEN TIMES IT WILL SHOW UP ON YOUR PHONE OKLAHOMA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE. IN THIS CASE THE PERSON SAYS THAT SHERIFF JOHNSON CALLED HER AND WAS INVESTIGATING A CASE OF STOLEN IDENTITY. >> DEPUTIES SAY IT’S IMPORTANT TO NOTE, PEOPLE IN ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS LIKE THE SHERIFF WILL NEVER CALL YOU INVESTIGATING A CASE OR ASK FOR PERSONAL INFORMATION. MOST OF THE TIME SCAMMERS PLAYING YOU BY EXPOSING YOUR WORST FEARS, HOPING YOU WILL CRACK UNDER THE PRESSURE AND GIVE IN. >> WE HAD A DOCTOR COME IN HERE A WHILE BACK, AGAIN SHE WAS IN TEARS, SHE WAS VERY WELL EDUCATED AND BELIEVED SHE HAD A WARRANT OUT FOR HER ARREST BECAUSE SHE DIDN’T SHOW UP FOR A COURT DATE AND SHE WAS IN TEARS BECAUSE OF THIS. Scammers hope to get Oklahomans with a call straight from the sheriff

The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office is warning of scammers pretending to be with the sheriff’s office. Scammers hope to get Oklahomans with a call straight from the sheriff. OSCO said someone is pretending to be them and looking for thousands of dollars.One thing they said Oklahomans can always count on is the sheriff’s office will never request payment or personal information over the phone. "If there’s a certain level of urgency to it, generally that means that you’re being scammed," said Aaron Brilbeck, a deputy with OSCO.OSCO said the number of scams circling the Oklahoma County area is increasing. They are asking victims for personal information or credit card information, and even posing as Sheriff Tommie Johnson to get it."The way the scam works is they’ll reach out to you via telephone and it’s a phishing scam so oftentimes, it will show up on your phone Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office. In this case, the person says that Sheriff Johnson called her and was investigating a case of stolen identity," Brilbeck said.Deputies said it’s important to note that people in administrative positions, such as the sheriff, will never call you investigating a case or asking for personal information. Most of the time, scammers play you by exposing your worst fears, hoping you will crack under the pressure and give in."We had a doctor come in here a while back. Again, she was in tears. She was very well educated and believed she had a warrant out for her arrest because she didn’t show up for a court date and she was in tears because of this these people are very good about what they do," Brilbeck said.Deputies said it’s often hard to make arrests in these cases because it’s so hard to trace the calls and they often come form out of state or even the country.
