PRETTY SWEET FUNDRAISER. I CANNOT. WHICH TIME WOULD YOU LIKE? IT’S A FUNDRAISER. CLOSE TO THE HEART FOR SPANISH TEACHER YOHANNES ALVAREZ AT MEREDITH MIDDLE SCHOOL. MARIA WAS FIVE YEARS AGO AND DESTROYED THE ISLAND. SO WHEN FIONA HAPPENED, WE ACTUALLY FELT LIKE IT WAS ANOTHER HURRICANE. LIKE MARIA. AND I KNEW THAT I HAVE TO DO SOMETHING RIGHT. OF COURSE. SHE PULLED TOGETHER A BAKE SALE DONUT. FORGET ABOUT PUERTO RICO TO MAKE SURE HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS BACK HOME AREN’T FORGOTTEN. MY FAMILY SUFFERED MORE THAN A WEEK WITHOUT ELECTRICITY. OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS SUFFER NO WATER FOR TWO WEEKS IN SOME PARTS OF PUERTO RICO RIGHT NOW DO NOT HAVE ELECTRICITY AND THIS YEAR IT CAN HAPPEN. TWO WEEKS AGO, HER STUDENTS WERE ALREADY ON BOARD. SINCE THE HURRICANE HIT. I JUST WANTED TO HELP OUT LIKE WITH MY TEACHER BECAUSE SHE’S FROM PUERTO RICO. DULE SAY TORRES IS A SEVENTH GRADER WHO WAS SURPRISED TO SEE THE SUPPORT FROM FELLOW STUDENTS. A SWEET LESSON LEARNED TODAY THAT SHE SAYS WILL LAST. JUST SEEING THE KIDS HELP OUT WITH LIKE LIKE GETTING MONEY AND JUST TO HELP OUT FOR SOMETHING THAT IS HAPPENING IN SCHOOL THAT JUST LIKE BRINGS OUT LIKE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY CARE. FUNDRAISER WAS CALLED DONUT FORGET PUERTO RICO AND DONUTS WERE THE BIGGEST SELLER. THEY WERE GONE ALMOST IMMEDIATELY IN JUST 2 HOURS. THEY TOOK IN ABOUT $400. The Spanish department and Dream To Teach students at Meredith Middle School in Des Moines held a fundraiser on Wednesday called 'Donut Forget about Puerto Rico' to raise money for continuing Hurricane Fiona relief in Puerto Rico.Spanish teacher Johanys Alvarez organized the bake sale that was held during the lunch hour at school. Students bought doughnuts, cookies and lemonade. They were able to raise $400."Maria was five years ago and destroyed the island, so when Fiona happened we actually felt like it was another hurricane like Maria and I knew that I had to do something," Alvarez said.The money raised will be donated to two organizations helping with the relief, El Foster Club and Taller Salud. El Foster Club is a nonprofit organization that helps find foster care for dogs and cats in Puerto Rico. Taller Salud is a feminist organization working on disaster response after Hurricane Fiona.
