Springfield police responded to a shooting Wednesday afternoon on South Nettleton Avenue.

Springfield police are investigating after a person was shot Wednesday afternoon and the suspect fled the scene.

Springfield Police Department Lt. Steve Schwind said a call came in at about 3 p.m. Wednesday stating that a victim had a gunshot wound to the lower back at a residence in the 700 block of South Nettleton Avenue.

Although several details are still being investigated as to what led up to the shooting, Schwind said both the victim and suspect were acquainted somehow.

Schwind said this was an isolated incident between the victim (in their late teens) and the suspect (believed to be in their 20s).

After the shooting, the suspect allegedly pedaled from the scene on a red bicycle, Schwind said.

The victim was transported to an area hospital, and their condition was not known as of 4 p.m. when Schwind addressed the media.
