High school student-athletes in Oklahoma can now be compensated similar to college athletes.
The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association released guidelines for students to navigate name, image and likeness deals. The OSSAA says it "does not specifically prohibit students" from signing NIL deals, and that the deals "will not put a student’s amateur status at risk."
But there are guidelines schools and students need to follow to make the deals happen.
The OSSAA says student compensation cannot be based on an athlete's performance or achievement. It also cannot be use as an "incentive to enroll or remain enrolled at a specific school." OSSAA says compensation also cannot be provided by schools directly, or by "any person acting as an agent for the school."
Any deals also cannot use school logos, team names, mascots or school apparel and equipment. The OSSAA also notes college associations should be contacted "for any rules" regarding NIL if students will stay in sports beyond high school.\
The new guidelines do not set a limit on the compensation student-athletes can receive.
The OSSAA on Wednesday announced Eccker Sports and the Bedford Agency will assist in providing NIL education, guidance and support to the agency.
