A southeast Iowa man is recovering from serious injuries after his house exploded in Chillicothe, Iowa.

Wapello County Sheriff Don Phillips confirmed Joshua Weir, 45, was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City following Tuesday's explosion on High Street.

Weir’s girlfriend, Christina Jones said Weir is suffering from burns on 60% of his body. He's reported to be in stable condition.

Jones also said the house exploded due to a gas leak. But Phillips said the official cause is still under investigation. She added that a total of four people lived in the home, along with her five dogs and one cat, all of which are safe.

Only Weir was in the house at the time of explosion.

Jones said her family lost all of their belongings. She said it was their home for the past 15 years and the only place her daughter has lived.

The family is still making temporary living arrangements.
