Fatality reported on FirstEnergy Pennsylvania demolition site

CARMICHAELS, Pa. — An investigation is underway at a power plant demolition site just north of Morgantown in Greene County, Pennsylvania following a recent death.

Officials with First Energy confirm a contract worker was killed Sept. 28 at the site where the Hatfield Ferry Power Plant near Carmichaels, Pa. is being torn down.

Media reports identify the worker as Cody James Hatt, 29, of Carrollton, Mich. He was pronounced dead at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

FirstEnergy spokesman Todd Myers said the worker was employed by the North American Dismantling Corporation. All demolition activities were stopped following the incident and an investigation was launched by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

The Hatfield plant was decommissioned in 2013 and demolition includes two 700-foot stack, a 540-foot stack, two hyperbolic cooling towers and a boiler.

Officials hope the 236-acre site will be a grassy field by 2024 and available for economic development.
