SOUTH LYON (WWJ) – A student is facing possible expulsion and criminal charges after admitting to making a shooting threat at South Lyon East High School.

The threat, found written in a bathroom at the school Tuesday morning, said "I'm shooting this school Oct. 5 and 7th and I have a gun SLEH b***h."

The incident prompted the school to go into lockdown as authorities searched the building. Students were told to leave their backpacks at home on Wednesday and they were searched when they entered the school.

South Lyon East Principal Karen Fisher said in a letter to parents Wednesday the investigation concluded Wednesday morning when a student admitted to writing the message in the boy’s bathroom.

He was at school on Wednesday and was searched by Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies and was not in possession of a weapon.

The student, whose name and age have not been released, was taken into custody and removed from the school.

“In addition to any potential legal consequences, the administration will be recommending the student be expelled from South Lyon Community Schools,” Fisher’s letter said.

After-school activities were canceled on Tuesday, but will resume as normal on Wednesday.

Morning arrival throughout the rest of the week will go back to normal procedures, but an increased law enforcement presence will be in place for the remainder of the week.

Additional support staff will be available Thursday to meet with students who may need emotional support, Fisher said.

“We are extremely grateful for the continued relationship and support from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. Additionally, we want to thank the staff members and students who assisted in working through this extremely difficult situation that has been emotionally difficult for everyone involved,” the letter said.

The threat is one of many made in the 10 months since the Oxford High School shooting that left four students dead and six students and a teacher injured. Dozens of students have been charged with making so-called copycat threats and law enforcement officials continue to emphasize that any students who make threats, whether credible or not, will be prosecuted to the fullest extent.
