YouTuber Addresses 'Pretty Alarming' Similarities Between SNL Charmin Bears Sketch and His Video

"This one was a little weird. I was like, 'Wow, that's very similar.'"
  • YouTuber Joel Haver thinks last weekend's Charmin Bears sketch on Saturday Night Live felt a little too familiar.

In a video titled "SNL stole my video" posted Monday, the 26-year-old called the Miles Teller-starring Saturday Night Live sketch "pretty similar" to one of his own videos. "Usually when these things come up, I'm able to see that it's the same concept but they took it somewhere different or it's similar but you can give them some leeway," said Haver. "But this one was a little weird. I was like, 'Wow, that's very similar.'"

Both the sketch and Haver's video feature a Charmin bear who wants to leave behind the family butt-wiping business and dance instead, earning disapproval from his father, and even some of the smaller details are mirrored in Saturday Night Live's sketch. "When it comes to these stealing accusations, I always err on the side of coincidence," said Haver. "I think parallel thinking does happen more often than not."

"When it comes to the Charmin bears thing, there’s a lot of coincidences that would have to line up to make it truly a coincidence, but I don’t think it was malicious," he continued. "It was either a subconscious borrowing from somebody on their writers' staff who saw my video, or it was a wild coincidence."

Haver has nearly 1.7 million subscribers on YouTube, and his video "Toilet Paper Bears" has raked in over 1.5 million views. Despite the similarities between the videos, he said he isn't particularly bothered, given that he has such a large platform now.

"If I still was a smaller creator, which I was for a long time, I could see it rubbing me the wrong way and me being a little more likely to believe they did steal it," said Haver. "I have to recognize I’m in a position to not be bothered by it."
