RAPID CITY — Say Ma and Ann Hoek reached the championship match in No. 3 doubles for Huron in the Class A State Tennis Tournament on Tuesday.
Ma and Hoek defeated St. Thomas More 10-2 in the semifinals to earn a berth in the title match.
Due to the action being forced inside due to rain, results from the finals were not available at press time.
Huron’s No. 1 doubles team of AnneClaire Rubish and Lizzy Heinen were edged 6-7 (8), 7-5, 10-3 by third-seeded Sioux Falls Christian in the semifinals. They faced Vermillion in the third-place match, but results were not available at press time.
Hoek was the highest finishing player for Huron in the singles competition at the Class A State Tennis Tournament on Tuesday.
After suffering a loss in the semifinals to second-seeded Caitlin Ott of Pierre 6-2, 7-6 (1), Hoek rebounded with a 10-9 (3) win against Madison Schman of St. Thomas More to finish third in sixth-flight singles.
Huron’s other two players in the semifinals — Rubish at No. 1 and Ma at No. 5 — finished fourth.
Top-seeded Athena Francisco of St. Thomas More handed Rubish 6-1 and 7-5 setbacks in the semfinals. Third-seeded Evelyn Graham of Madison then edged Rubish 10-9 (5) in the third place match.
Ma, who was the top seeded at No. 5 for the Tigers, was edged 2-6, 7-5, 11-9 by fourth-seeded Amity Strand of St. Thomas More in the semifinals. Kourtney Walti of Pierre, who was the second seeded, defeated Ma 10-4 in the third-place match.
Two of the three Huron players in fifth-place matches on Tuesday, ended the season with victories.
Fifth-seeded Heinen defeated sixth-seeded River Haskel of Aberdeen Roncalli 8-2 to claim the fifth spot at No. 2 singles.
Medina used an 8-4 win against Amelia Pederson of Milbank to secure the fifth spot in No. 3 singles.
Seventh-seeded Katie Palmer of Rapid City Christian got past Huron’s Bethany Engelhart 8-4, leaving Engelhart with a sixth-place finish.
Huron’s No. 2 doubles team of Medina and Engelhart used an 8-2 win against Milbank to claim the consolation championship.
