FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — On Saturday you can “Cruise-in for a Cause” and maybe even meet your furry best friend at an event in Rocky Mount.
The Franklin County Humane Society (FCHS) is holding its inaugural “Cruise-in for a Cause” event on Saturday October 8 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Midpoint Chevrolet in Rocky Mount. Organizers say the event will raise funds for the FCHS and feature everything from a live band, adoptable pets, prizes and more.
Live country and bluegrass music will be provided by the Wildfire Band and Palumbo’s Hoagie House will be serving steak/chicken hoagies, specialty burgers, wings and more. Homestead Creamery will also be making an appearance with an ice cream truck.
“We are extremely excited to host an event of this magnitude, and we hope people will come and learn more about our organization and the wonderful pets we have for adoption,” said Briana Barker, event planner. “Due to the pandemic, the economic downturn and limited veterinarian services, FCHS has experienced a decline in donations and adoptions as well as an increase in dog and cat surrenders.”
FCHS says they are a non-profit organization and receive no government funding. They have also been reporting a decline in adoptions–due to the decline food and medical costs have been on the rise.
“We started seeing a decline in adoptions in 2021 and the trend extended into this year as well,” said Anita Cannaday-Scott, FCHS shelter director. “Unfortunately, the volume of pets does not seem to be decreasing.”
FCHS says since 1999 they have provided care to more than 25,000 animals.
