The Hartlin Inn, a beloved local bar and grill at 30 New York Avenue in Sound Beach, closed more than a year ago after the owners retired. Finding it tough to re-open after Covid shut down their business, they announced last year that they had sold to a “a family who were frequent customers at Hartlins and hated the fact that we had closed.”

In a post on Facebook the owners told a little bit of the story of the new owners:

“This family is purchasing The Hartlin Inn in memory of their son, who was not only a frequent customer, but a member of the FDNY and also a local volunteer firefighter. Unfortunately, he lost his life in 2011 as a result of critical injuries he suffered at a fire in 2005. The firehouse was always this firefighter's second home. We would often hear him say, ‘I'm going to the firehouse.’ or ‘I'm cooking at the firehouse tonight..’...whether it be in the city or at a local firehouse.”

The owners plan to name their new place Firehouse Restaurant.

The owners went before the town planning board on October 3rd to propose an addition for an ADA bathroom as well as legalize existing additions and decks. The owners also presented facade work that they propose for the existing building.

The 1.29-acre property has room for 20 parking spaces. Plans show 12 tables in the dining room and five in the bar area. There is no seating on the deck area.

The planning board approved the application at its October 3rd meeting.
