The property owner made the island annexation request to the city of Wichita on the 101-acre plot, located a 1/2 mile west of Wichita’s current boundary, at the southwest corner of 21st Street North and 151st Street West.

Upon annexation, Wichita would serve the area with water and sewer services, police and fire response, and would be responsible for future road maintenance.

The county's finance department says the annexation would result in an annual net loss of less than $60 to Fire District Number One. The property is located adjacent and just to the east of land that would comprise a portion of the proposed Northwest Expressway.

Island annexation refers to a section of land that stands alone from the contiguous city boundaries of the community doing the annexing.

In other business, Commissioners discussed adding Juneteenth to the county’s list of observed holidays.

While the board is in favor of the move, they will need to subtract another observed holiday from the 10 days the county already has, most likely Presidents' Day.

The board tabled the item until November, when they typically discuss the county’s upcoming holidays for the coming year.

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, was designated a federal holiday in 2021.
