The Yankees had a surprise in store for Gerrit Cole Tuesday night after setting the new franchise single-season home run record, having Ron Guidry call in to the clubhouse and connecting it through the loudspeakers so everyone could hear his congratulatory message.

“I actually have been waiting for this moment ever since you put on a Yankee uniform because I knew you were gonna do it at some point in time,” Guidry said. “But congratulations to you and your team…you go get some rest now and get ready for the playoffs.”

Cole responded with a “thank you sir,” to which Guidry replied, “My name’s not sir, my name is Gator.”

Afterward, the floor was Cole’s to share some words with the team as they all sat in front of their lockers.

“Thanks for letting me go first, because it would suck to go second after Aaron Judge,” Cole said.

“I’m a lifelong Yankee fan, to be mentioned with guys like Ron Guidry is a little overwhelming. I want to thank Trevy and Higgy. I thought it was really magical that we were able to split it between the two of you, Higgy catching the tie and Trevy catching the win. You guys have been there every step of the way along with everyone else in this room. To steal a line from Big G, thanks for hanging in there with me, and let’s get this done.”
