Lake County begins search for Sheriff’s position appointment

Lake County Commissioners are starting their search for someone to fill the vacancy of Sheriff Tim Walburg, who is retiring from the position in January.  During their meeting Tuesday, commissioners discussed their timeline for finding the right candidate to appoint to the full-time position.  Commission Administrative Officer Shelli Gust provided commissioners with several options, but told them that it is up to their discretion how they want to proceed.

Commissioners agreed to set an early timeline, with letters of interest for the Sheriff’s appointment due by Monday, October 17th at 5:00 p.m.  The commission will then hold its first round of interviews at a special meeting on Tuesday, October 25th at 6:00 p.m.  A second round of interviews will be conducted at a special commission meeting on Thursday, October 27th, also at 6:00 p.m.  Commissioners are expected to make a decision on the appointment for Sheriff at their regular meeting on November 1st.

Walburg asked commissioners to consider the earlier timeline for appointing someone to the position in order to make the transition easier.

Whoever is appointed to the Sheriff’s position will start the appointment on January 9th of 2023 and end on January 5th of 2025.  The person who is appointed will need to run in the general election in November of 2024 and win for a new two-year term that will begin in January of 2025.

There are minimum qualifications for the position, including that the candidate must possess a valid South Dakota Law Enforcement Certification.
