FERNDALE, Wash. – A man is in custody following a standoff at a motel in Ferndale on Tuesday, October 4th.

The incident began just after 4 a.m. when a Ferndale Police officer pulled a vehicle over for making an illegal turn, having no plates and an unreadable temporary tag.

The driver pulled into the Haggen store parking lot and then pointed an AR-style rifle at the officer as they approached.

The driver took off, abandonded the vehicle and then barricaded himself in a room at the Super 8 Motel near Main Street.

He refused to speak with police for several hours.

City of Ferndale spokesperson Riley Sweeney says the suspect was taken into custody just after 10 a.m.

Jail records show 46-year-old Kenneth Frank Velen was booked on suspicion of 1st Degree Assault with a firearm.
