ABERDEEN — Junior Kevin Weller carded an 88 on Monday to lead a trio of Redfield golfers during the opening round of the Class A State Boys’ Golf Tournament at Moccasin Creek Country Club.
Weller’s score, which included a birdie on the opening hole, puts him in six-way tie for the 45th spot in the 97-golfer field.
Seniors Mitchell Mack and Nolan Gall had scores of 92 and 94, respectively, for the Pheasants in the opening round.
Four golfers share the lead heading into the final round of the 36-hole event. Vermillion teammates Trey Hansen and Cooper Girard had 2-over-par scores of 74, along with Dakota Munger of Chamberlain and Keeton Newborg of Tea Area.
Kaleb Jost of Sioux Falls Christian, who is the defending Class A champion, and Finn Anderson of Aberdeen Roncalli shared the fifth spot with scores of 75.
Vermillion, which had four of the top 15 golfers in the first round, leads the Class A team standings with a 304.
Aberdeen Roncalli was second at 320, followed by Dakota Valley at 326, Sioux Valley at 328 and West Central at 329.
