Desert Hot Springs City Council: Why I think Jan Pye is the best candidate for District 3

Reader submissions

As someone who retired to Desert Hot Sprints in 2001 and has participated in civic and philanthropic organizations for the last 20+ years, I have witnessed Jan Pye and Adam Sanchez, both District 3 candidates for city council, and their involvement with the city.

Whereas Jan as a councilmember always listened to all sides carefully and then consistently voted for things that proved to be best for the city, Adam's tenure as mayor was, in my view, disastrous.

I believe that during that time, the city's reputation suffered and the city moved backward in terms of serving citizens. It is very important for Desert Hot Springs that those in District 3 vote for Jan Pye.

(If you have any doubts, just ask any long-term resident of Desert Hot Springs.)

Rollins, Calvert should do a town hall

Recently, candidates running for the Palm Springs City council faced off at a forum at the cultural center. This gave audience members a chance to hear each candidate's views on several important issues.

Because of redistricting, I am now in the 41st Congressional District. The incumbent is Republican Ken Calvert, and his Democratic rival is Will Rollins. I have questions for both men, especially Mr. Calvert, who has been in this position for 30 years. I want to ask what he has accomplished or not during his long tenure for his constituents.

I would like to see a town hall meeting between the two men. I understand Mr. Calvert is not interested in a public forum, while Mr. Rollins is ready to address his new constituents and debate Mr. Calvert.

Mr. Calvert’s record in Washington, D.C., is something of concern, such as his “dismissal” of the Jan. 6 insurrection and his negative stand on abortion rights and those of the LGBTQ community.

Mr. Rollins seems like a new fresh voice for our district who has worked his way around Washington and knows the system, and I believe can get things done for District 41. That said, I have questions for him as well.

Please talk to us, gentleman, so we can make an intelligent decision on Nov. 8.
