Police: Woman was smoking pot on way home from work, liccense suspended

Tamaqua police charged Emma Caridad Matos, 26, of Hazleton, with driving under the influence of a controlled substance and driving without a valid driver’s license on Wednesday.

According to police, an officer was monitoring traffic speeds from the intersection of Owl Creek Road and Route 309 around 9 p.m., and clocked Matos’ vehicle going 64 mph in a 45 mph zone. The officer stopped the vehicle, and noticed an odor of freshly burned marijuana while speaking to Matos. Police said Matos admitted to having smoked a “blunt” while on her way home from work in Hamburg.

Upon further investigation, police found that her driving privileges had been suspended because of a previous offense.

She was taken into custody and refused a blood test. She was released into the custody of a family member. Matos was also charged with speeding.
