DETROIT (WWJ) - A homeowner in Detroit fled his house just in time Wednesday morning as a large fire completely consumed the structure and left him in only his underwear.

"No shoes, no jacket, my friend lent me some clothes," Larry Malone told WWJ's Charlie Langton at the scene off Fleming, near 7 Mile and Dequindre.

Malone said the fire broke out sometime before 6 a.m. He was watching TV when he smelled smoke and found the entire back of his home on fire.

Malone said he managed to escape the building dressed only in his boxers.

Detroit Fire Fighters quickly arrived on scene, Langton reported, and were able to contain the blaze and put the fire out.

Malone was the sole occupant and no injuries were reported.

At this time, it is unknown how the fire started.

"Electricity or something," Malone offered. "The electricity was popping and banging back there. I don't know why that was going on."

Malone had lived in the home for three years -- he is now left to find a new place to live.

"Unfortunately though for Larry, it's going to be a total loss for his house," Langton reported.
